Cat Friendly Practice® Program

Cats are a special companion animal where there are millions more owned cats than dogs in the United States. In spite of the numbers advantage, cats visit veterinarians less frequently than dogs. What is the reason for this fact? Visits to the veterinary hospital are stressful for both cats and cat owners plus many owners do not believe cats need routine examinations for wellness and preventive care.

By expanding the Cat Friendly Practice®  (CFP) Program and encouraging veterinarians to participate, the American Association of Feline Practitioners provides a solution to this lack of preventive care while at the same time delivering improved veterinary care for cats and decreasing stress during veterinary visits. Winn Feline Foundation wholeheartedly supports the goals of the CFP program. Winn board member, Drew Weigner, DVM, has joined the CFP advisory council as Winn’s representative.

Fix by Five Program

Fix by Five logo-300x300The Marian’s Dream Fix by Five Months Program advocates the recommended age for spaying/neutering cats be moved back four to six weeks to no later than 5 months of age. This small change would remove the risk of unwanted litters by female cats which are in their cycle and could become pregnant. If there are more cats in shelters than there is space available, euthanasia may be the end result. Many of these shelter deaths would be eliminated by sterilization before puberty (by 5 months of age).

Winn Feline Foundation has funded feline health studies showing the safety of early spaying and neutering of cats and Winn’s board members unanimously approve of the Feline Focus Task Force call for veterinary practitioners and professional associations to recommend sterilization of cats by five months of age. This recommendation provides veterinary practitioners with a consistent message that may increase veterinary visits and spay/neuter compliance while reducing the risk of pet relinquishment and unwanted offspring.
